The Town of Smyrna is located on the northern border of Chenango County in Central NY. It is primarily a rural, farming community with a population of approximately 1,400 residents. The Town was founded in 1808 and originally named Stafford. Within a month's time, it was changed to Smyrna, based on a coastal city in ancient Greece. The Town has a rich history preserved in the Smyrna Town Hall-Opera House built in 1902 & restored in 2014. This authentic theater serves as a government facility, community center and concert hall. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Town contains a Village incorporated in 1828, a well-staffed volunteer fire department, family-owned farms, a working feed mill, a large saw mill facility.
